A tribute to my sweet long-haired dachshund, Carmel Ann. She stole my heart and enriched my soul. I miss her every day.
She had multiple nicknames (Carmel, Marmy, Girlie, Girlie Girl, and Marmy Roo), but her given name was Carmel Ann, after all, she was my fur child and children need a first and middle name. I never had human children, so Carmel was my world and my firstborn. I was very much the epitome of a helicopter mom watching over everything she did and doing everything I could to keep her safe, happy, and healthy.
When Carmel was 6 or 7 months old, I had a very brief go at being a stage mom. Carmel Ann was so beautiful that, I entered her in a pet beauty contest. This was her headshot. We were going to use the cash prize for our “buy-a-house” fund.
She clearly was the most beautiful of the contestants, but a turtle won because it turned out to be a paid popularity contest and I could not afford to buy her votes which were $10 a piece. I was devastated. Carmel took it all in her usual happy-go-lucky way, wagging and barking all the way home.
Carmel was born on February 24, 1999, and passed on August 23, 2016. In those 17 ½ years, she touched the hearts of many. She cheered up seniors in nursing homes, she loved on her human cousins and children of my friends, and she brought a smile to the face of everyone who she saw in her daily travels. Most importantly, she brought me a joy that was deeper and sweeter than any joy I have ever known.
Carmel Marmel, Girlie Girl is missed and loved. My wish is that every human can find this kind of joy and love in the eyes of a beautiful puppy. They are always puppies, by the way…from the minute they are born until they turn into angels. I have the most beautiful fur angel watching over me every day and for that, I will be forever grateful.
